Dent Solution FX
âRestoration. Protection. Correction.â
Ian Cordle
Some people are born and have an acumen for specific careers. I’ve always been intrigued by the fine points of automobile maintenance, restoration, and detailing. Growing up, I had a knack for making money and an eye for detail.
My father, an insurance agent, and broker, was fanatical about waxing and cleaning our cars. He had a successful insurance business and many clients who were excited about letting me clean and wax their vehicles. This kept me occupied and very busy earning extra money between the ages of 12 and 17. During this time I met my future employer and mentor, who introduced and trained me in the art of Paintless Dent Repair (PDR).
I headed up the school, and during the two years, I trained over 230 journey-level techs from all across America at Professional Technical Institutes. Many of these long-time craftsmen were skilled in auto body, sanding, polishing, and other talents that I would discover while teaching them dent repair. At the age of 19 the school had filled its allotted number of openings; my employer informed me that the institute was closing and that I would be permitted to continue where he left off.
I immediately opened a shop in Pleasanton, CA, called Absolute Dent and Detail. I had many students I had trained at my shop that I made long-lasting relationships with still to this day. I met the owners of car polishing systems that at this time were the leader in Teflon exterior coatings. Since my training facility was next door, we became great friends, and I learned the science of paint coatings, wax, and many other aspects of a vehicle paint and detailed science. This knowledge at the time was a hard sell since so many things were changing in the automotive industry. Urethane paints were evolving, and clear coats were becoming much different from years past. While I always had a passion for offering services no one else could do when someone asked for detail, I sometimes would lose them because I was better at showing them than explaining what I could offer them.
During this period, I had a decline in business. As a new, young business owner, I struggled to make things work and find my place in the market. I had a thirst for knowledge and the desire to start a family, so I took a position at an autobody shop. For about two years, I worked as an auto body tech before taking a position as a manager at a high-end detailing business.
This is where I found a community of customers and noticed people who wanted more and needed additional services that only I could provide. I worked there for two years, I was part of the company’s growth from one mobile van, two wash units, and two in-house detailers to a million-a-year revenue business. We offered clear 3M films, gold plating, wheel repair, vinyl repair, touchup. Ect. So I got a first-hand view of auto reconditioning.
This is where I would meet the CEO of UPS, who hired me to restore his 1970 Mustang convertible for the Oakland Roadster Show. Thanks to my assistance and knowledge, he took home Best of Class and Best Overall Detail. This is when I first learned how to stage show cars at events, and we went on to take home second place at the Sacramento Auto Rama later that year. After spending some time in the showroom circuit, I began working for Dent Pro and spent three years before establishing my own company.
I’ve kept my detailing skills and polishing knowledge up to date with weekend projects and the ever-increasing number of clients. I’ve always continued to expand my expertise in coatings like ceramics and graphene, and I knew I’d eventually open a store where I could sell everything under one roof.
The opportunity presented itself when I was able to teach my son Zain about paintless dent repair. I then established my business on Soscol Avenue, where I’ve been full-time in-house for the past four years and given my son the mobile side of the company to focus on the store and services provided. I now have 5,000 square feet on Soscol Avenue in Napa’s auto row between five bays. I coined the term “FX” for these extra services and defined excellence in all areas as my definition. Our current service offering includes world-class dent repair, high-quality protective coatings, paint protection films, ceramic window tint/ films, concourse detailing, wet sanding, polishing, Stek certified installation of clear brahs, fashion colored films, wheel repair, and so much more. My goal is to offer an experience second to none in all these fields because I understand them throughout.
